Children develop their skills at different rates, however they typically achieve milestones at certain ages that are considered developmentally appropriate. For example, a 12 month old can understand his/her own name, a 3 year old can combine 3-4 words together to form a short sentence.

General Speech and Language Strategies:

Play! Children learn best through natural interaction and play with their caregivers. When you are playing with your child:

• encourage eye contact and face-to-face communication – this allows for more joint interaction and eye contact
• use simple and clear language to talk about what your child is looking at
• wait to hear what your child has to say or do
